About the National Literacy Trust

The National Literacy Trust is an independent, national charity dedicated to building brighter futures (www.literacytrust.org.uk ). Poor literacy means:

  • not succeeding at school
  • being less likely to be happy and healthy
  • having limited opportunities in the workplace and throughout life
  • Being less likely to have a home fit to live in

This year the charity's aim is to raise £1 million to transform the opportunities of children, families and individuals. With these funds the National Literacy Trust will support people from disadvantaged communities across the UK to develop the skills they need.

Through Pushing the Envelope we all have an opportunity to support this important work. Remember - you may take the reading of this page for granted. Your support will help the National Literacy Trust to reach those who might find it more difficult.

£10 can help 3 families enjoy reading and improve their reading skills.

£60 can recruit and train a mentor to prepare disadvantaged teenagers for employment.

£100 can support our unique research into the barriers individuals face and how we can best help them gain literacy skills.

£250 can fund a class of children to take part in a reading programme with their local football club.

£500 can help 10 families discover reading for pleasure and learn new skills in sharing books.
